Welcome Back Backpack

The Give More HUGS Welcome Backpack event was created to provide underprivileged students and their families with the necessary supplies for the upcoming school year, to provide students with inspiration for school, and to bring the community together to help those students in need. Each student will be given a backpack filled with supplies such as pens, pencils, paper, binders, and other supplies from each school district’s required supply lists to help them succeed in the year to come. This event will be held on August 12, 2017 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Title one schools in San Antonio, Temple, San Angelo, Lubbock, and Amarillo. Last year GMH was able to provide 2,000 students at Edgewood ISD in San Antonio with backpacks, and this year we hope to help 5,000 students there plus 250 students at Hector Garcia Elementary in Temple, 250 students at Lee Middle School and Glenmore Elementary in San Angelo, 300 students in Amarillo, and 200 students at Dupre Elementary School in Lubbock. We are coordinating with each school district and other community organizations to ensure every student and their families are aware of the event in order to receive these resources and inspiration to start the school year on the right foot. The HUGS Ambassadors and leadership team will work with the many different school districts and other community partners such as the Burkhart Center in Lubbock, the Porter Henderson Library in San Angelo, Heal the City in Amarillo, United Way of Central Texas in Temple, and Microsoft and the Tobin Center in San Antonio to make sure the event is carried out smoothly to effectively help the most students possible.

GMH is requesting a sponsorship to help provide school supplies for the 5,500 students we intend to help in these cities. The primary goal is to raise funds to provide underprivileged students with school supplies and books through our literacy initiatives and leadership training and mentorship programs for secondary and college students. This funding would help pay for advertising, marketing materials, books, and school supplies.
